Carnegie wasn’t being cynical—he was being honest. You can hold the ladder, cheer from the bottom, even put your own plans on pause to help—but if the other person won’t take the first step, you’re just holding a very heavy metaphor.
There’s wisdom in knowing the difference between support and sacrifice. And there’s peace in realizing it’s okay to let someone choose not to climb.
