There’s a strange kind of freedom in loosening your grip on expectations. We’re taught early on to set goals, dream big, and visualize outcomes. That’s useful in some areas, but in daily life? High expectations can be a sneaky thief of joy.
Think about it: when you walk into a situation already armed with a script of how it should go, you’re basically begging reality to disappoint you. The waiter wasn’t fast enough. The vacation wasn’t perfect enough. The kids weren’t quiet enough. The list never ends.
But if you show up expecting nothing? Suddenly the smallest things feel like gifts.
The text from a friend you thought had forgotten you. The random five-minute stretch of peace in a noisy house. The parking spot right in front of the store. None of these are guaranteed, which is exactly why they feel so good when they happen.
This isn’t about lowering the bar just so you can step over it. It’s about shifting your perspective. When you expect nothing, you create space for delight. Surprises sneak in through the cracks you left open.
I’ve learned this the hard way as a parent. If I expect a road trip to be filled with angelic silence and smiles, I’m setting myself up for frustration. But if I expect nothing but chaos, then every moment of laughter, every sing-along, every silly joke feels like a little miracle.
The same goes for relationships, work, and even personal goals. Sometimes the surprise is that things turn out better than you dared to imagine. Other times, the surprise is that you grew in ways you didn’t plan for. Either way, surprises only land when you stop clinging so tightly to your own script.
Here’s the kicker: expecting nothing doesn’t mean caring less. It means being open to whatever happens without demanding it look a certain way. That’s a mindset shift worth practicing.
So maybe today, loosen your grip a little. Expect nothing. Watch what happens. Odds are, life will find a way to surprise you.
