“Better to trip with the feet than with the tongue.” — Zeno of Citium
Sometimes a few words are enough to shift the way we see the day.
Zeno’s telling us that it’s better to stumble physically than to say something we instantly regret. A bruised knee heals. A careless word? That one sticks around. And if you’ve ever blurted out something in the wrong moment (hi, welcome to being human), you know exactly how much harder it is to walk back what was said than it is to walk off a scuffed toe.
This quote hits especially hard if, like me, your mouth sometimes moves faster than your brain. But it’s also comforting. Mistakes of the body are easier to forgive—by others and by ourselves. And it’s a gentle reminder to check in with our thoughts before we let them escape into the world.
