Welcome to today’s Thought of the Day and Question of the Day, where things take a turn for the wonderfully weird. We’re leaning into the strange and stretching the limits of imagination—both philosophically and zoologically. Today’s post explores why the universe is stranger than our minds can handle… and whether giving sharks legs would make them scarier or just clumsier.
Thought of the Day:
“The world is not only stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine.” — J.B.S. Haldane
Every time I think I’ve wrapped my head around how bizarre the world is, quantum physics, anglerfish, people who enjoy room temperature soda, something comes along to crank the dial even further. Haldane’s quote reminds us that our imagination, vast as it feels, has edges. And the real world? It laughs at those edges and does a backflip over them.
There’s something oddly comforting in that, though. You don’t have to understand it all. You’re not failing if you can’t explain consciousness, or why toddlers suddenly scream at fruit. The world is under no obligation to be logical. That’s both freeing and mildly terrifying.
It’s why I love It’s only an Island if you look at it from the water—because not everything has to make perfect sense to feel true.
So today, take a moment to appreciate the bizarre. Whether it’s the way your dog stares at corners, or the fact that flamingos bend their legs backward, give the strange its due. It’s not broken. It’s just stranger than we can imagine.

Question of the Day:
Would sharks be more or less scary if they had legs? Why?
Okay, I know this is ridiculous, but stay with me. I can’t stop picturing a shark with two beefy legs awkwardly paddling around the ocean like a half-submerged gym bro. And when it gets to land? It just flops around like a fish out of water—because, well, it is.
But here’s the thing: what if the legs actually made them more agile? What if sharks could saunter up onto the beach like it’s no big deal? You’re relaxing in your beach chair and suddenly you see a hammerhead casually strolling toward your cooler. That’s a whole new kind of nightmare.
Or maybe the legs backfire. Maybe it makes them less streamlined, less mysterious. I mean, how scared can you be of something that skips leg day and proves it?
This question made me think about other times we’ve reimagined the scary stuff—like that time we asked what villain you’d bring to life and why, or have you ever had an apex shark encounter. Fear is funny like that. Sometimes, just adding a little weirdness defangs the whole thing.
So would sharks be scarier with legs? I don’t know. But I do know they’d be a lot funnier.
Let’s Get Weird Together
So, what do you think—would legged sharks terrify you, or just trip over their own fins? And have you had a moment lately where the world reminded you just how strange it really is?
