In today’s Thought of the Day and Question of the Day, we’re diving deep—though maybe not literally—into the mysterious magnetism of the ocean and our very human curiosity (or fear) about what swims beneath the waves. From Jacques Cousteau’s poetic reverence to a perfectly reasonable question about whether you’ve ever locked eyes with a shark, let’s wade into wonder together.
🧠 Thought of the Day:
“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.” — Jacques Cousteau
There’s something about the ocean that feels alive in a way land just doesn’t. The rhythm of the waves, the smell of salt in the air, the way it makes you feel small and infinite all at once—it’s intoxicating, even for those of us who prefer to admire it from a safe distance.
Jacques Cousteau had a lifelong love affair with the sea. I admire that, though I’m more of a respectful admirer from shore. He saw the ocean as a mystery to be explored, a world teeming with life and color and revelation. I see the ocean and think, “Yep, beautiful. And probably full of things that want to nibble me.”
That doesn’t mean I haven’t been tempted by the spell of the sea. I once swam with trained dolphins on my honeymoon. It was magical. Also a little terrifying. They were friendly, sure, but they’re still wild(ish) animals with teeth and impressive speed. And I was floating like a clumsy seal in a rented life vest. But I get it, Cousteau. The sea’s spell is real—it just doesn’t pull on everyone with equal strength.

❓ Question of the Day:
Have you ever had an apex shark encounter? What happened?
I haven’t. And that’s very much on purpose.
As a general rule, I stay out of the ocean. I’m not anti-sea—I just don’t feel the need to make myself available as a snack. That said, I’ve always been a little fascinated by the idea of a shark cage dive. I would get in a cage. I’d do it for the story, for the bucket list check, for the chance to feel that cocktail of fear and awe that only comes from being a few feet from a creature that could end your story with one bite.
There’s something strangely appealing about putting yourself in the vicinity of danger while knowing you’re (probably) safe. I’m not jumping in with Great Whites, but I’d lower myself in a cage with a camera and a deep breath. Then I’d immediately start planning how I’d blog about it afterward, obviously.
I imagine most shark encounters don’t go full-Jaws, but there’s always a primal part of your brain that doesn’t know that. That part screams: Big teeth! Swim away! Who approved this vacation?
If you’ve ever asked yourself why you fear something and done it anyway, you might enjoy embracing the unknown. And if you’re the kind of person who’s already done a shark dive—respect. I’m sure you’d love something a person should try once in their lifetime.
