It’s easy to feel like the universe should return your texts. Like there’s a scoreboard somewhere, and if you’re racking up enough Good Human Points, something good should be coming your way. But today’s Thought of the Day and Question of the Day invite us to pause and ask: What does the world actually owe us… and do we believe the cosmic scale will balance itself?
Let’s talk about entitlement, karma, and why Mark Twain is still absolutely roasting us from the grave.

🧠 Thought of the Day:
“Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.” — Mark Twain
Oof. That’s not just a truth bomb—it’s a carpet bombing.
Twain doesn’t sugarcoat it. He’s reminding us that the world didn’t ask us to be here, didn’t send an engraved invitation, and certainly didn’t promise anyone a six-figure salary, daily affirmations, or matching emotional availability. It just is.
I’m in a stretch of my life where I feel like I’m doing everything I can — showing up, being kind, grinding through the chaos—and yet nothing nothing is going right. That’s why this quote hits me like a frying pan to the back of the skull(which I’m surprised hasn’t happened yet) The world doesn’t owe me a reward for good behavior. But I owe it to myself to keep showing up anyway.
This thought pairs nicely with “What part of your life is circling the drain the fastest?” if you want to keep riding this uncomfortable-but-freeing realization train.
Question of the Day:
Do you believe in karma?
Okay, if the world owes us nothing, does that mean the bad guys get away with it?
Some people believe karma is a kind of divine Amazon Prime—next-day delivery on justice. Others think it’s just wishful thinking disguised as philosophy. Personally, I want to believe in karma. It’s comforting to think that people who lie, cheat, and cut you off in traffic will eventually have to pay the bill.
But here’s the truth: karma might not be a universal accounting system… but your choices do leave a trail. And even if life isn’t a boomerang, you still have to live with yourself when you throw it.
Sometimes the idea of karma helps us feel a little more in control. Like we’re not just screaming into the void but participating in a story where goodness matters.
If this question gets your wheels turning, revisit “What is something you saw or heard that traumatized you as a child?” or “When the person you could have been meets the person you are becoming…” for more reflective dives.
