There are normal thank-yous, the kind you say when someone passes the salt, holds the door, or hands you a tissue at the exact right moment. Then there are the weird ones. The thank-yous that slip out before your brain catches up. The ones that make you realize how deeply you can feel gratitude for something completely absurd.
I’ve said thank you to traffic lights. I’ve thanked my coffee machine like it’s a trusted friend. I once even thanked a spider for taking out a mosquito that was about to take me out. There’s something beautiful about that kind of weird gratitude, it’s unfiltered, unplanned, and real.
When life’s a little overwhelming, the weird thank-yous are the ones that pull me back. Like when one of my kids finally decides to sleep through the night, that “thank you” isn’t just for them, it’s for my sanity. Or when I find an old $5 bill in a winter coat pocket. That’s not just a thank you; that’s a whispered prayer of joy.
Gratitude doesn’t need to make sense to anyone else. Sometimes the strangest things remind you that you’re still capable of noticing the small gifts, even when they’re hiding in chaos, cobwebs, or caffeine.
So yeah, maybe I’m the kind of person who says “thank you” to inanimate objects. But honestly? I’d rather live that way than forget how to be amazed by the ordinary.
