Question of the Day:
What’s the best surprise you’ve ever woken up to?
This morning, the world looked different than it did when we went to bed.
Overnight, the first measurable snow of the season fell here in New Jersey. Nothing dramatic. No emergency alerts. Just enough to soften the edges of everything. The kind of snow that makes the neighborhood quieter and the light feel a little kinder.
Before I even had a chance to fully wake up, my kids were already at the window. Faces pressed to the glass. Eyes wide. The kind of wonder that doesn’t need commentary or context. Just pure amazement that something so ordinary can still feel brand new.
That reaction is what pushed this question from hypothetical to personal.
Because when you ask about the best surprise you’ve ever woken up to, it’s tempting to think big. Life-altering news. Huge events. Once-in-a-lifetime moments. But the longer I sat with it, the more I realized that the best surprises are rarely the loud ones.
They’re the quiet ones.
A morning where the schedule loosens instead of tightens.
A sense of calm where you expected stress.
An unexpected pause before the day demands everything from you.
Snow mornings are special because they force that pause. They slow traffic. Cancel plans. Lower expectations. And without asking permission, they give you space.
As adults, most of our mornings begin the same way. Alarm. Routine. Responsibility. Even the good days come with a mental checklist waiting to be tackled before your feet hit the floor. Surprises don’t usually factor into the equation.
Which might be why they matter so much when they do show up.
The best surprises I’ve woken up to weren’t dramatic announcements or grand gestures. They were moments where the weight of the day lifted before it had a chance to settle in. Where something unexpected made the morning feel lighter instead of heavier.
Sometimes that surprise came from outside. Weather. Silence. A day off I didn’t know I needed.
Sometimes it came from people. A message. A gesture. A reminder that I wasn’t as alone in my head as I thought.
And sometimes, the surprise was internal. Waking up and realizing I felt okay. Or hopeful. Or rested. Which, depending on the season of life, can feel like a small miracle.
That’s the thing about this question. It reveals what you value without asking directly. If your answer is about rest, you’re probably tired. If it’s about connection, you’ve been craving it. If it’s about quiet, you might be overstimulated. And if it’s about wonder, maybe you’ve been missing it.
This morning’s snow didn’t change our lives. But it changed our pace. And sometimes, that’s more than enough.
So when you think about your answer, don’t search for the most impressive story. Look for the one that still feels warm when you remember it. The one that surprised you by how much it mattered.
Because the best surprises don’t always show up to change everything. Sometimes they just show up to remind you what’s already here.
