There are two kinds of people in this world: those who hand out full-sized candy bars on Halloween, and those who are dead inside.
Okay, maybe that’s a little harsh. But let’s be honest, Halloween night has rules. Unspoken ones. Like: porch lights on means “yes, we’re participating,” and raisins mean “we’ve given up.” So today’s Question of the Day asks: What’s something you shouldn’t give out on Halloween?
Let’s start with the obvious.
Weapons.
This shouldn’t have to be said, and yet every year, someone thinks it’s a great idea to toss a plastic sword or slingshot into a kid’s bag. Here’s a general rule: if it can poke, stab, or launch, it’s not a treat. It’s an ER visit waiting to happen.
Expired Medications.
I wish this one were purely hypothetical, but somewhere out there, a well-meaning person has emptied their medicine cabinet into a candy bowl. The road to hell is paved with expired aspirin.
“Fun-Sized” Candy.
Let’s call this what it really is, disappointment wrapped in shiny paper. There’s nothing “fun” about a bite that ends before it begins. If you want to hand out joy, go full-sized. Be a legend. Your house will live in neighborhood lore for years.
The Real Answer: Don’t Give Out Disinterest
When I was a kid, there was one house that didn’t just hand out candy, they performed Halloween. Fog machines, spooky music, fake spiders dropping from trees. The candy was great, sure, but the experience was unforgettable.
And that’s the thing: Halloween isn’t about what’s in the bag, it’s about the feeling. The shared laughter, the quick jump-scares, the neighbors waving across the street.
So maybe what you shouldn’t give out isn’t a thing, it’s a vibe. Don’t hand out indifference. Don’t act like the kids are interrupting your night. For a few hours every year, we all get to play pretend together. That’s the real treat.
