For me, it’s fish sticks. As a kid, they were everything: crispy on the outside, mysterious on the inside, and perfect when dipped in way too much ketchup. They were practically gourmet cuisine to eight-year-old me. But somewhere along the way, the magic died.
Maybe it’s because I’ve had actual seafood now, and the humble fish stick can’t compete. Maybe it’s because nostalgia always tastes better in memory than in reality. Whatever the reason, one bite today and I’m instantly reminded of school cafeteria trays and that one questionable microwave dinner I swore never to repeat.
But that’s the funny thing about food, we grow out of it. Our tastes shift as we do. The foods we once begged our parents for suddenly feel heavy, bland, or just plain wrong. I used to worship Lucky Charms. Now? I just think about the sugar crash. I used to think Pizza Rolls were the height of fine dining. Now, I wonder how my stomach ever survived them.
It’s not just about food, though. It’s about growth. If we never outgrew anything, we’d all still be sitting on the floor eating fish sticks and chugging chocolate milk. Tastes evolve, and so do we. And honestly, that’s something worth celebrating.
