You have done something for me that I could not do. With my dying breath, I will keep fighting to preserve the country you protected.
That’s what I’d say. And honestly, I’d probably choke up trying to get the words out.
I’ve never worn a uniform. I’ve never stood watch through the night wondering if I’d see morning. I’ve never been asked to put my life between my country and danger. But others have, and because of them, I can sit here in a warm house, typing on a keyboard, worrying about things like Wi-Fi speeds and deadlines.
It’s humbling.
Veterans Day isn’t about politics, and it’s not about pretending war is clean or simple. It’s about acknowledging that courage is contagious, and that freedom always comes with fingerprints. Someone carried it here for us.
I think we all have our own ways of saying thank you. For some, it’s flying the flag. For others, it’s volunteering, donating, or just taking a moment of silence. For me, it’s trying to live like the gift I’ve been handed is worth the cost.
Maybe the best way to honor veterans is to live a life they’d recognize as something worth fighting for, to be brave in smaller ways, kinder in quieter ones, and willing to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s not easy.
So to every veteran who ever traded comfort for duty, who risked everything so I could have the luxury of choice, thank you. You’ve already done more for me than I can repay, but I’ll spend the rest of my life trying.
