Let’s be real—mine wasn’t even served at school until high school.
Growing up in a parochial school in the 1980s, your options were: bring a lunch or starve. My usual lineup? Peanut butter sandwich, pretzels, and a fruit roll-up that fused to the wax paper by noon. No cafeteria trays, no chocolate milk cartons, no mystery meat Mondays.
By the time I did get access to “hot lunch,” it was like discovering a whole new planet. Pizza, fries, vending machines—it felt like winning the adolescent lottery.
But honestly, those homemade lunches—those brown bags packed with love, or at least obligation—hold more nostalgia than anything that came from the cafeteria.
Sometimes questions like this tell us more than we expect.
