We all make promises to ourselves. Some are big, some are small, and some feel so casual that we don’t even notice when we break them. But today’s Question of the Day isn’t about tomorrow or next week—it’s about what you need to follow through on today.
For me, that promise is often embarrassingly simple: go to bed earlier. I’ve said it more times than I can count. Yet when the house is finally quiet, the kids are asleep, and I have a couple hours to myself, I find a way to stay up far later than I should. There’s always another email to write, another idea to sketch out, another YouTube rabbit hole waiting for me. Tomorrow-me always pays the price.
That’s the tricky part with promises to ourselves: nobody else is holding us accountable. Nobody’s going to check in and say, “Hey, did you actually drink enough water today?” or “Did you keep that promise to finally start exercising?” When we don’t keep our word to ourselves, it slides under the radar. But deep down, we know. And every time we let it slide, we teach ourselves—quietly, but persistently—that our own commitments don’t matter.
On the flip side, keeping even the smallest promise to yourself can shift everything. Making the call you’ve been putting off. Sitting down to write for fifteen minutes instead of saying you’ll “start tomorrow.” Even something as silly as actually putting the laundry away the day it’s washed instead of letting it live on “the chair” for a week. (You know the chair. We all have one.)
The bigger lesson is this: you build trust in yourself the same way you build trust with anyone else. By following through. By showing up. By keeping your word.
So today’s question isn’t meant to overwhelm you with guilt, it’s an invitation.
You don’t have to overhaul your life. Just pick one thing. One promise. One action that says: “I matter enough to do this for me.”
