I’m going to say something that may cost me some seasonal goodwill.
My answer is A Christmas Story.
Now, let me be clear. This is not a “never seen it” situation. I’ve watched it. I know the beats. I know the leg lamp. I know the tongue. I know the BB gun. I understand why it has cultural gravity. I just don’t need it on a 24-hour loop every single December.
Once every few years? Fine. Maybe even enjoyable. But annually, repeatedly, in every room of the house like it’s a required background hum of the season? That’s where I quietly bow out.
And that’s really what this Question of the Day is about.
Holiday movies come with a strange kind of pressure. If something is labeled a “classic,” it’s not just entertainment anymore. It’s a moral obligation. You’re supposed to love it. Or at least tolerate it politely. Opting out feels like rejecting the holidays themselves, as if the spirit of the season is somehow stored on a DVD and skipping it puts you on a watchlist.
But tastes change. Seasons of life change. Energy levels change.
What hits differently as a kid doesn’t always land the same way when you’re older, more tired, and already overstimulated. Some movies feel comforting forever. Others feel loud. Or long. Or oddly stressful. And that doesn’t make you broken. It makes you honest.
I think a lot of us keep watching certain holiday movies out of momentum, not joy. We put them on because we always have. Because someone else insists. Because it feels easier than explaining why we’d rather not. But somewhere along the way, tradition quietly turns into obligation.
This question gives you permission to notice that.
It’s also a sneaky way of learning about people. Someone who refuses to watch a certain holiday movie usually has a reason. Maybe they’ve seen it too many times. Maybe it reminds them of a stressful season. Maybe it just doesn’t match their sense of humor. None of those reasons need defending.
And the answers are always entertaining. People get oddly passionate about this one. Debates break out. Lines get drawn. Someone inevitably brings up Die Hard. Someone else feels personally attacked.
That’s part of the fun.
But underneath the jokes, there’s something quieter happening. People are admitting what they don’t enjoy anymore. And that’s not nothing. Especially during a season where enjoyment is often expected on a schedule.
So yeah. A Christmas Story is mine. I don’t hate it. I just don’t need it every year. And admitting that feels strangely freeing.
Which brings it back to you.
What’s the holiday movie you refuse to watch, no matter how many times people insist it’s a “classic”?
And more importantly, are you still watching it out of joy, or just habit?
