Nightmares have a weird sense of humor. They take whatever you’re worried about, that email you forgot to send, that thing you said ten years ago, that time you tripped in front of your crush, and remix it into a horror movie starring you.
I’ve had recurring nightmares before, and they have gotten weird. But I’m not going to spout nonsense here about drowning or flying. Because the truth is most of my dreams escape my memory within hours of waking. I wish remembered to write them down when I wake up. Or maybe, I’m hiding from there memory.
I will say this, if dreams are our subconscious trying to work things out, then nightmares are the subconscious yelling, “You’re not listening!” They pull fears and insecurities from the corners we’ve swept them into and shove them under the spotlight. Maybe that hallway dream is about feeling stuck. Maybe that underwater one is about being overwhelmed. Maybe it’s both.
But here’s the twist: nightmares aren’t punishment. They’re communication. They’re your inner voice saying, “You’ve been holding your breath too long.” They’re fear wearing a costume, dramatic, exaggerated, and sometimes uncomfortably accurate.
So the next time you wake up from one, don’t just shake it off. Ask what it was trying to show you. What were you running from? What did you lose? What did you almost find? The scariest part of any nightmare isn’t the monster, it’s realizing you’ve met before.
