A few months after my mother-in-law passed away, one of my son’s toys started making noise out of nowhere. And no, this isn’t one of those exaggerated “it moved on its own!” stories. I mean the kind of toy that should only make noise when you press a button… except no one was pressing anything.
At first, I laughed it off. Batteries glitch, right? Maybe it was short-circuiting. But over the next two days, the thing would just come alive on its own, sometimes during the day, sometimes in the middle of the night, when the whole house was still. It would babble from across the room like it had something important to say, and each time, I’d tell myself it was nothing.
On the second night, it happened again, this time from a closed closet. That was it. We pulled the batteries out and set the toy aside. The noise stopped. A few days later, we decided to get rid of it altogether.
Was it paranormal? Probably not. Was it unnerving? Absolutely. But here’s the strange part: it didn’t feel threatening. It felt… familiar. Like someone was trying to remind us they were still around. Maybe that’s wishful thinking. Or maybe the people we love find little ways to stay connected, even through something as small and silly as a talking toy.
I still don’t know what happened. But every now and then, when something odd occur, a flicker of a light, a door that seems to open on its own, I just smile and think, “Okay, message received.”
