If Santa retired tomorrow, what job do you think he’d take next?
At first glance, this feels like a throwaway Christmas question. A little silly. A little absurd. Exactly the kind of thing you might toss out while the coffee is still brewing.
That’s intentional.
Some questions work best when they don’t announce how serious they are.
My own answer is that Santa would probably become a postal worker or a masseuse.
Postal worker because he already understands routes, weather, long hours, and the quiet responsibility of delivering things people are waiting for.
Masseuse because after one very long night of hauling gifts, squeezing down chimneys, and managing reindeer logistics, he’s earned the right to help other people relax.
But underneath the humor, there’s something quietly revealing happening.
When we imagine Santa without the suit, without the one night a year he’s known for, we start thinking about what actually defines him. Reliability. Service. Showing up consistently. Carrying a lot so others don’t have to.
And without much effort, the question turns back on us.
If the roles you’ve been playing disappeared tomorrow, what would still come with you? What instincts would remain? What kind of work would feel like a natural extension of who you already are?
That’s why playful questions matter. They lower the stakes. They sneak past our defenses. They invite honesty without demanding conclusions.
This is what the Question of the Day is meant to do. Open a door and let you walk through at your own pace.
If you want to explore more invitations like this one, the Question of the Day archive is full of questions that reward curiosity more than certainty.
And if you’d like one thoughtful question like this delivered each morning, you’re always welcome to join the daily email. It’s a small daily nudge toward reflection, without pressure to answer perfectly.
