This question seems harmless. Friendly, even. The kind of thing that gets asked while you are still half asleep at a diner, staring at a laminated menu that smells faintly like coffee and regret.
But once you really think about it, “How do you like your eggs?” is not a small question at all.
It is a question about preferences. Boundaries. Self knowledge. And whether or not you are willing to pretend you like something just to make other people comfortable.
Last night, my wife made a quiche for dinner. It looked great. It smelled great. It was clearly made with care. And I did not enjoy it.
This is the part where I feel the need to defend myself.
It was not bad. It was not poorly made. And it is not that I do not like eggs. I do. Just very specifically.
Scrambled? Yes.
Cheese omelette? Maybe.
Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese? Absolutely.
That is about where my egg journey ends.
Do not put eggs in my fried rice. You can keep your deviled eggs. I do not want them in my salad or sneaking into my burger like they belong there. They do not.
And if you think I am particular about eggs, do not get me started on corn.
This is not me being difficult. This is me knowing myself.
Somewhere along the way, we decided that having strong preferences was a flaw. That being “easygoing” meant liking everything or at least pretending to. But there is something refreshing about being honest about what you enjoy and what you do not.
I am not anti quiche. I am just pro clarity.
The older I get, the more I appreciate questions like this. Not because they reveal anything profound about breakfast, but because they expose how comfortable we are with our own limits. How often do we force ourselves to like things because we think we should? Foods. Hobbies. Conversations. Situations.
“How do you like your eggs?” is really asking, “Do you know what works for you?”
There is no prize for liking everything. There is no medal for pretending. And there is no shame in saying, “That is not for me.”
The best part of this question is that everyone has an answer. Some people will give you a long explanation. Others will answer quickly and decisively. Both responses tell you something.
So today, I am leaning into it. I like my eggs simple. Familiar. Predictable. And I am perfectly okay with that.
Your answer does not have to match mine. It just has to be honest.
