I have a confession to make: I’m not really a horror movie person. I don’t like being startled, chased, possessed, or psychologically manipulated while eating popcorn. I’m more of a give me a decent plot and a warm blanket kind of guy.
So my pool of potential monsters is, admittedly, limited. I haven’t gone head-to-head with The Conjuring demons, or watched Hereditary because I value sleeping through the night. But I did watch Bird Box. Once. With the lights on.
And those invisible creatures? They’re my pick for scariest movie monster.
You never see them, but you see what they do to people. They twist perception. They turn your own thoughts into your worst enemy. They make you see things so awful that you self-destruct. And honestly—doesn’t that sound like life on a bad day?
That’s what makes the Bird Box monsters so terrifying. They don’t attack your body; they attack your mind. They remind me that sometimes the scariest things we face aren’t out there in the world, they’re the ones we carry around inside us.
The fears we can’t name. The anxieties that show up uninvited. The “what ifs” that we never quite silence.
Give me a vampire or a zombie any day. You can run from those. You can outsmart them, hide, or maybe even fight back. But how do you run from what lives in your head?
