If you’ve ever been called “weird,” congratulations, you’re officially not boring.
Normal is one of those words that sounds comforting but means nothing. It’s a moving target, shaped by whoever’s holding the megaphone at the moment.
When you’re a kid, normal might mean eating lunchables and watching Rugrats.
When you’re an adult, it apparently means working 40+ hours, complaining about being tired, and pretending to love small talk about the weather.
The problem is, “normal” is rarely neutral. It’s a social trick, a polite way of saying, “Stay in line.”
Why “Normal” Is Overrated
Think about it: almost everything we now celebrate was once considered strange.
Electricity. Rock music. Tattoos. Therapy.
At one point, someone thought all of those were signs of madness.
So if you ever worry about being too weird, too different, or too much, remember this, “normal” is just yesterday’s fear trying to stay relevant.
What’s normal anyway? Drinking coffee every morning but side-eyeing someone who meditates? Scrolling through social media for hours while saying you “don’t have time to read”?
If that’s normal, I’ll pass.
My Kind of Normal
My normal is having more ideas than hours, laughing at my own jokes, and trying to explain to my kids why cereal counts as dinner sometimes.
My normal is messy, sincere, and often a little chaotic. But it’s mine.
So who decides what’s normal?
You do.
Always have, always will.
