“Some people have no idea what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” — George Carlin
Sometimes a few words are enough to shift the way we see the day.
And sometimes those words are so brutally accurate, they make you laugh, sigh, and rethink your entire career path all at once.
Carlin’s brilliance here isn’t just in pointing out the obvious—it’s in naming the absurdity we all see but rarely say out loud. We’ve all worked with that person who exudes absolute confidence while clearly flying blind. And the wild part? It often works. They’re promoted, praised, and followed—sometimes because people assume confidence equals competence.
Meanwhile, many of us tiptoe carefully through life, triple-checking our work, worried about being “found out.” The irony is thick: the more you know, the more you realize you don’t know, and that humility can become a muzzle.
So here’s your permission slip: Go ahead and improvise. Trust your instincts. Sometimes the people who seem like they know what they’re doing… don’t. And that might include you—and that’s okay. Just fake it with grace.
