“Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and then waiting for the rat to die.” — Anne Lamott
Sometimes a few words are enough to shift the way we see the day.
This one hits hard—and it should. Forgiveness isn’t a gift for the other person. It’s a lifeline for yourself. And yet how often do we walk around with grudges disguised as boundaries, quietly sipping our own poison while hoping someone else feels the sting?
I’ve done it. Held on to anger, replayed a hurtful comment like a broken record. I told myself it was about justice, but really, I just didn’t want to let go. It made me feel powerful… until it didn’t. Until the weight of it started slowing me down.
Anne Lamott says this better than most. Forgiveness doesn’t mean the offense never happened. It means you’re done letting it own you. You put the cup down.
