Every now and then, the Thought of the Day and Question of the Day hit like a one-two punch—one gets you to laugh and nod, the other asks you to dig a little deeper. Today’s pair does just that. We’re talking about the wild test of patience known as feeding a hungry household and the even bigger question: What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever made it through?
Let’s get into it.

🍳 Thought of the Day: “Nothing builds character like cooking while everyone yells they’re starving”
If you’ve ever tried to cook while someone (or several someones) hovers behind you like a pack of hangry wolves, you know what this is about.
You learn things about yourself in that moment:
- Your tolerance for chaos
- Your ability to time pasta and temper expectations
- How creative you can get with snacks as distractions (“Here, eat this carrot while I finish the chili”)
At our house, it’s not a real dinner until someone cries and someone else tries to “help” by opening a box of cereal. But in the middle of the mess, there’s something oddly noble about it—trying to turn raw ingredients (and raw emotions) into something warm and good.
It’s in the waiting, the whining, the burnt-toast mishaps that something resembling character is slowly simmering. And maybe, just maybe, that’s the real secret ingredient.

Question of the Day: What’s the most difficult challenge you’ve completed?
We all have that one thing. The hill that felt like Everest. The test we thought would break us.
Maybe it was graduating. Maybe it was getting sober. Maybe it was making it through last Thursday without losing your mind.
For me? Fatherhood. Not a day of it—a season of it. That blurry stretch when sleep was scarce, money was tight, and the only thing louder than the crying baby was the doubt in my head.
And yet—I showed up. Sometimes cranky. Sometimes clumsy. Always trying.
You don’t really know what you’re capable of until you’ve had to do something hard while still keeping your heart open. That’s the challenge beneath the challenge: not just to survive, but to remain yourself through it.
So, what’s yours?
