Question and Thought for the Day February 6, 2025
Thought of the Day: “A snow day literally and figuratively falls from the sky—unbidden—and seems like a thing of wonder.” — Susan Orlean
Question of the Day: What was the most exciting thing about having a snow day that you remember from when you were a kid?
—
There was nothing quite like the feeling of waking up to a fresh blanket of snow, the kind that silenced the world in a way that only winter could. Before checking anything else, you’d peek outside, hoping—praying—that the world had transformed overnight. And then came the moment of truth: turning on the TV or refreshing the school district’s website (or if you’re old enough, waiting for the radio announcer to list off the lucky schools).
And when your school’s name appeared? Pure, unfiltered joy.
A snow day was a free pass from responsibility, a temporary suspension of reality that turned the ordinary into something extraordinary. The rules changed. The day was no longer dictated by bells or schedules but by the rhythm of play, warmth, and adventure.
Maybe you remember the hurried scramble to pull on too many layers, each one adding to your awkward waddle as you rushed outside before the best sledding spots were claimed. Or the impromptu snowball fights that started with friendly volleys and quickly escalated into all-out warfare, alliances shifting as quickly as the snowfall itself. There were snow forts, hastily constructed with red-cheeked determination, and the inevitable moment when wet mittens and frozen toes sent you sprinting back inside for hot chocolate—extra marshmallows, of course.
For me, it wasn’t just the snow itself but the feeling that anything was possible. A normal Wednesday could suddenly become an unforgettable adventure. The world slowed down, and for a little while, it felt like time belonged to us.
As adults, we don’t get many snow days. The world doesn’t pause like it used to. But maybe we can still carry that sense of wonder with us. Maybe we can find small ways to reclaim the magic of an unexpected pause, a moment to step outside the routine and embrace the joy of something unbidden, something wonderful.
What was your most exciting snow day memory? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to hear how you spent those unexpected gifts of childhood.
