Or Just Stop Being a Jerk.
“Do good every day” is a popular mantra of many people today.
They have all the intentions in the world to do good. But it’s a lofty goal that most people will never live up to because they don’t understand what it means to do good.
Doing good is more than trying to save the rainforests (yes this is still a thing) or stop global warming. Both are lofty and worthy goals but it is much simpler.
It’s saying good morning to the barista while they are making your coffee. It’s saying excuse me when you accidentally bump someone at the store. It’s yielding in traffic and giving a polite wave when someone lets you merge. It’s a kind word when someone does you wrong. Doing good is any small opportunity to make someone’s day a little brighter.
I fall short of doing good at every opportunity I’m presented. I try, but sometimes emotion gets in my way. I sometimes get frustrated because your shopping cart is blocking the isle. That’s OK because we all fall short.
The great thing is as, long as the world keeps spinning you have the chance to do something good every moment of every day. Also, doing something good is addictive like a drug. The more you do, the more you want.
Do you want to do good every day? Start with really small things like saying good morning and meaning it. you’ll be surprised how far your good will travel. And the more often you do the small things, the easier it becomes to do the big things.
Do good without expectation of something in return, and you’re going to start attracting good things. They will magically appear as if from no where.
If you can’t find it in your heart to smile or say hello to someone, at the very least, maybe try not to make someone’s day worse by screaming at them, degrading them, or flipping them off in traffic. Just move on with your day or become a hermit.
